The final Snowflake Challenge is to create my own challenge. I haven't listened to music as much as I used too, and I'm sure that has negatively affected my mental/emotional/physical well-being. Music has always been a touchstone for me, and I need to make more time for it - no matter what my schedule. So my challenge: To make a soundtrack(s) of my year. Maybe it will be a set of playlists or one giant one -- no idea yet. It is unfortunate that 8tracks shut down this month, as they were my preferred way of sharing playlists. Maybe I'll check-in with periodic tracklists to keep me going. Playlists FTW!!!

Gosh, today's challenge is about favorite tropes or kinks. I'm not sure I could pick just one, or even a handful. Probably why [community profile] trope_bingo is one of my favorite bingo challenges. For me, challenge prompts and tropes are perfect for short to medium length stories. I've used them as starting points, particularly when writing for a rare pair or fandom, and also as a means to add a bit of structure to a ficlet/idea that I want to develop into something a bit longer. Twisting/playing with tropes is also quite fun.

A few favorites of mine: AU's, crossovers, May-December romance, hurt/comfort, fix-its

Today's challenge was to create a fanwork in your own space. Although I have a few fanfics in various draft/revision/ideas-in-my-head stages, none of them would have been ready for today. So I decided to turn to another medium - one that I used to do quite a lot of ... Icons.

Ever since I purchased my first Macbook with Retina display, I have lost my passion for the 100x100 px medium. I know I can change my resolution to a standard laptop while I work in PS but somehow it just doesn't feel right for me. I thought I'd try a few more icons today to see if I could get my mojo back--sadly the answer is no.

Putting these behind the cut as they are for the new Star Trek: Picard show. I don't think they are spoilery, but better safe than sorry.

Behind once again, so a two for one today :)

Challenge 10 was to talk about a creator who inspires. The writers under the cut have written some of my favorite shows/episodes/novels. Nothing like a behind the scenes story about one of your favorite episodes or a call for folks to join in a writing sprint (jane) to help me focus on my own creative projects.

Challenge 11 is to recommend creative and fannish resources. Below the cut: 2 creative and one fannish.

Going to mix this up a bit and rec fandom creators on Twitter. Now if Twitter would stop messing with the way they display my timeline, my twitter world would be a happier place. Listed in no particular order.

1. [twitter.com profile] Larkistin89 An amazing artist on twitter- mostly star trek and stargate but also candids of cast members.
2. [twitter.com profile] rsundayr - tweets #DailyDistratctions of Sam/Jack clips with prompts.
3. [twitter.com profile] XFchemist - stargate vids and artwork
4. [twitter.com profile] samismymuse - Samantha Carter and Amanda Tapping gifs #365daysofamandatapping

In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you.

Hmm, I normally don't think about wishlists too often, but there are a few things ...

1. Recommendations for DW/LJ comms similar to [community profile] onedeadplotbunny. A comm where I am held accountable for clearing out some of the plot bunnies that have been hanging around for too long.
2. Icons for The Good Place.
3. Icons for The Simpsons.

Today's theme is goals. With a big move coming up next month and all that entails, I'm going to keep this list rather modest. Placing under the cut.

Today's challenge is for pimping communities. I don't have any fandom specific comms but I will pimp a few of my favorite general, writing, challenge, and bingo comms.

Putting them underneath cuts by category.

My fannish timeline

Does anyone even remember usenet and listservs? Or even Yahoo! groups? Well, my first fandoms were the X-Files and Star Trek:TNG on those archaic mediums. At first I just read fanfic- then I discovered x-files fan vids. One of my favorites was all the yummy X-Files men set to "It's Raining Men". That got me briefly into trying my own hand using adobe premiere elements. I made about a dozen Picard/Crusher vids and posted them to LJ where I made some lifelong friends. I also had my first exposure to the toxic side of fandom. I will never understand fans that feel it is okay to harass/attempt to bully others.

Livejournal introduced me to the wonderful world of challenges and omg the land comms (whedonland for example). The land comms nudged me to finally dip into writing fanfic as well as creating more icons/graphics. The whedon shows were my fandom of choice and then I started branching out into other fandoms: too many to list but landcomms and BTVS segued into Bingo/Prompt challenges and Stargate.

I tried tumblr for a bit, but ultimately wound up back at lj/dreamwidth where I found a few excellent writing communities. I'm still addicted to bingos and prompt challenges but I'm also heavily into NaNoWriMo and just writing for the joy of writing.

So I probably should have done this on Jan 1 -but I spent most of the day revisiting Scrivener and Trello and trying to figure out a good workflow for writing/creating in 2020. I hunkered down and turtled the last few years and lost touch with creative activities and fandom in general. Well new decade, new outlook.

In that spirit here are a few of my favorite fandoms that will likely feature prominently in any challenges/exchanges,

Stargate - a bit obsessed with Jack/Sam (they are one of my few OTPs) but love all the characters. I also write some general/non-ship fic.
Star Trek - TNG - Picard/Crusher and general fic. I've dabbled in the past but will likely add the new Picard series to my list. Discovery is also a strong candidate although a few of the characters bug me sometimes.
X-Files - an oldie but goodie.
The Good Place - A current favorite with lots of possibilities for challenge fills. Hopefully a new fandom to play in this year.

Friending policy - My interests page is horribly outdated but I tend to post bingo cards and challenges as public anyway. Locked entries are all non-fandom things.

Day 13:
In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
  • Finish 3 WIPs
  • Revise 2015 NaNoWriMo fanfic novel
  • Read 12 books
  • Post 3 new fanmixes

Day 12

In your own space, create a fanwork. Make a podfic, an icon, a sketch, a meta, or a rec list. Arts and crafts. Cross stitch. Draft an essay about a particular medium. Put together a picspam or a fanmix. Write a review of book you love, a ship manifesto, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. Create something. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Day 10
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Day 8

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Day 8 )

Day 9

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I keep a link of Master Fics and Graphics postings stickied each year which is as far as I usually go in promoting works I've done. But in the spirit of the snowflake challenge ...
Day 9 )

Recommend a fannish or creative resource. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Stargate Timeline - Not only does it have airdates of episodes -- which can be helpful if you are trying to place something that happened in Stargate Atlantis in regards to what was happening say in Stargate SG-1 -- but if you click on a year, it will list all related Stargate events (character births/deaths, major events, actors/actresses affiliated with Stargate - click on 1969 for example).

Not necessarily fandom/fannish but a few useful tools that can be used for free (for basic use)

Toggl - Great if you say want to do word sprints or another timed task - Or if you want to track how long you spend working on something ...

Trello - If you like to make lists - or lists of lists  - I have one board that I track bingo, exchanges and other challenges I've signed up for, one board that tracks writing projects through draft versions, whether it is off to beta, or completed, one board for tracking which episodes I've screencapped - obviously I like to make lists, LOL

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Always hard to pick only a few, so many excellent works out there, so I thought I'd focus on fics gifted to me. I've separated them by fandom - but otherwise they are in no particular order. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them.

Fandom - Doctor Who
A Variety of Valentines by ANGSWIN - The Tenth Doctor celebrates four very different Valentine's Days.

Fandom - Grimm
Tangled Web - by OhWilloTheWisp - Adalind tries to gather the courage to tell Nick that her powers have returned. But the risk of losing everything she has is too great, and she finds it easier to hide her nature than to Nick the truth. When the case Nick is working comes too close to home Adalind might not be left with a choice.

Fandom - Highlander: the Series
Pass/Fail by LadySilver - When Methos is charged with a murder he didn't commit, he needs Joe's help to solve the case before the police find out about the one he did.

Fandom - Stargate SG-1
The Sweetest Words by angelus2hot - Unspoken words are now out in the open.

Fandom - Star Trek: The Next Generation
neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words by sixbeforelunch - "Deanna nodded once to herself, adjusted her hair, straightened her uniform, and set out to conqueror the day. Nine hours later, she was ready to admit that the day had won."

Fandom - The Flash
Not So White by haldoor - Barry and Cisco take a break from fighting crime, along with the team; this is a slice of a conversation they might have if they ever visited the British Post Office in Antarctica

Day 2

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

One of my favorite things about fandom is the power to reach so many across the globe. And when those people band together to do good works -- like donating to a celebrity's favorite charity on their birthday -- It's amazing! Small individual donations add up. And it really feels good to do something positive.
